Menopausal symptoms

What you need to know

Have you checked for reliable medical advice about going through the menopause? We recommend NHS Choices and here is their menopause page.

Before you start to take remedies to help you through the menopause you should  run though the pre-launch Self Care CHECKLIST (downloads as a pdf)

Then check out the Self Care Library for a FREE introduction to menopause, and for an independent thorough review of the evidence for a wide range of self care approaches: things you can do at home, things you can buy and people you can see. Each is given a simple rating for benefits, risks and costs.

The herbal medicine option

In Europe there is a unique category of herbal medicines, registered on the basis of their traditional use. As an example, in the UK the medicines regulator (MHRA) has both registered and fully licensed herbal medicines. A condition of medicine status is that manufacturers have to guarantee quality standards, label with appropriate self care conditions and agreed doses, and insert approved information leaflets to assure safe use. The following, available in UK supermarkets and pharmacies or online, are registered or licensed for use in helping symptoms of menopause.

Black cohosh

  • Menoherb tablets (Schwabe Pharma)
  • Menopret tablets (Bionorica)
